Drivin' All Night
03:29
|
|
||
well i've been drivin all night
and i've been drivin all day
and i ain't heard a single good song
since somewhere outside santa fe
i got four more hours
before i make it to the show
and i really gotta pee
so how come all the rest stops are closed?
oh this tourin’ life
well it ain't the way they say
find me sitting alone in the back of the bar
just waiting to get paid
they tolerated me in roswell
in albuquerque they gave me hell
in las cruces, they seemed to think i was okay
well i've been drivin all night
and i've been drivin all day
and i ain't heard a single good song
since somewhere outside santa fe
i don't wanna go to nashville
that's not what i'm gonna do
i write these songs for myself
not for a&r men in suits
but at the same time
i can feel it growing stale
too many more nights like this
and maybe i'll wind up in jail
kicked right out of every bar in taos
even gallup's getting weary of having me around
but i wouldn't change a thing
not the broken down van in the middle of white sands
not the sleeping on benches in truth or consequences
no i wouldn't change a thing
well i've been drivin all night
and i've been drivin all day
and i ain't heard a single good song
since somewhere outside santa fe

this city is crazy
and it don't make sense
it's hard to tell up from down
and right from left
sometimes i get so lost
i just sing these words
ain't that the corner of first and third
ain't that the corner of first and third
just how i got here i ain't quite sure
i went digging for diamonds
but all i found was dirt
ain't that the corner of first and third
some people say that
i'm just down on my luck
if you just keep truckin' on
then things will start lookin' up
but sometimes i get so lost
oh when will i learn
ain't that the corner of first and third
ain't that the corner of first and third
just how i got here i ain't quite sure
i went digging for diamonds
but all i found was dirt
ain't that the corner of first and third
and all these bright lights are blinding me
as i stumble through these tulsa streets
sometimes i swear i hear her calling me
right on back to gallup in a dream
ain't that the corner of first and third
just how i got here i ain't quite sure
i tried my best lord
but i did my worst
ain't that the corner of first and third

Guns of Gallup
02:26
|
|
||
when they kick down your front door
how're you gonna come?
with your hands on your head
or on the trigger of your gun?
yeah when the feds break in
how're you gonna go?
shot down in the desert
or waiting in death row?
you can crush
you can bruise us
but you'll have to answer to
the guns of gallup
the money it feels good
and your life you like it well
but surely your time will come
as in heaven as in hell
you see he feels like butch now
born out on that desert skid
his game is called survivin
at the end of the sundance kid
you can crush
you can bruise us
but you'll have to answer to
the guns of gallup
shot down in the desert
waiting in death row
the guns of gallup
you can crush
you can bruise us
or even shoot us
the guns of gallup

i’ve searched through all the great cathedrals
roamed across this god-forsaken land
i’ve ate the bread, drank the wine and kneeled
but i still just don’t seem to understand
see my church has a stable not a steeple
the saddle is the pew in which i pray
on sundays i sleep later than most people
and i don’t think i’ll ever change my ways
i found the lord in horses,
dingy bars, and lonesome songs
and who the hell are you to call me wrong?
like an A.M. country station
it’s just so clear at night
there’s nothing quite like knowing
that you’re right
anyone can join my congregation
folks gather here, come from far and wide
we don’t waste our time with confirmation
another round is what we call a tithe
i’ve seen all the famous stained glass windows
but they just don’t compare with neon light
my church has a jukebox and a patio
we confess our sins here every friday night
i found the lord in horses,
dingy bars, and lonesome songs
and who the hell are you to call me wrong?
like an A.M. country station
it’s just so clear at night
there’s nothing quite like knowing
that you’re right

Chicken & Waffles
03:59
|
|
||
i'm just a lonely boy from gallup, new mexico
and you're just a city gal from tulsa, oklahom
birds of a feather
well you know what they say
we go together but not quite in that way
we go together like chicken and waffles
well it sure could be better
but at the same time it's not awful
we go together, somehow it's true
and i don't know what i'd do without you
sometimes you're here
sometimes i'm not
sometimes we go for weeks
where we don't even talk
well i know that people come
and people they go
whenever i’m convinced you’re gone
you call me on the phone
we go together like chicken and waffles
well it sure could be better
but at the same time it's not awful
we go together, somehow it's true
and i don't know what i'd do without you
i've tried so hard just to find another
but every time i walk away
i end up back in the gutter
my shrink she says that i need to move on
but no matter what she says
i’ll keep on writing lonesome songs
we go together like chicken and waffles
well it sure could be better
but at the same time it's not awful
we go together, somehow it's true
and i don't know what i'll do without you

Both Kinds
03:22
|
|
||
i'm not a cultured man
yeah that's what they all say
couldn't tell the difference
between a rembrandt and a monet
but i like both kinds
both kinds of music
i ain't been to dallas
and i ain't been to phoenix
i love gallup so damn much
i don't know if i could ever leave it
but i like both kinds
both kinds of music
i like both kinds of music
country and western
a rockin’ and a groovin’
makin my head turn
i like both kinds of music
western and country
gimme a quarter for the jukebox
cause i ain't got no money
i like both kinds of music
well i don't drink champagne
and i don't eat caviar
i drive a chevrolet
not some fancy european car
but i like both kinds
both kinds of music
i don't speak french
and i don't know italian
i'll never sail the seven seas
or climb a mountain
but i like both kinds
both kinds of music
i like both kinds of music
country and western
a rocki’ and a groovin’
makin my head turn
i like both kinds of music
western and country
gimme a quarter for the jukebox
cause i ain't got no money
i like both kinds of music
